If there’s one thing we’ve learned in our BBQ adventures, it’s that The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, is not just a restaurant – it’s an experience. This January, we had the privilege of visiting The Shed during the NBBQA Mini Conference and the epic Shed Showdown Steak and BBQ Competition, and let us tell you, it was an unforgettable journey of smoky flavors, great music, and even greater people.
The NBBQA Mini Conference
The National Barbecue and Grilling Association (NBBQA) knows how to bring the BBQ community together, and this mini-conference was no exception. Held at The Shed’s one-of-a-kind venue, the conference brought together pitmasters, brands, and BBQ enthusiasts from across the country to share ideas, techniques, and plenty of laughs.
We kicked things off with insightful panels and discussions. Big names like Kell Phelps of NBBQA and Barbecue News Magazine and Carey Bringle, owner of Peg Leg Porker, were there to share their knowledge and passion for the craft. Industry-leading brands like Grillblazer, represented by Bob Healey, showcased innovative products that are changing the game for backyard BBQers and pros alike. Meanwhile, we caught up with legends like Sylvester from V-Forge and Mike Starr from Blazingstar BBQ. Let’s just say, inspiration was as abundant as the smell of hickory smoke in the air.
The Shed Showdown
Once the conference wrapped up, the real excitement began. They turned up the heat – literally. It was time for back to back cookoffs; the Rhinestone Cowboy Steak Cookoff and The Shed’s annual competition, The Shed Showdown Steak and BBQ Competition, making it one of the most highly anticipated events on the BBQ calendar.
Competitors from all over rolled in with their smokers, grills, and an arsenal of secret recipes. We met some incredible teams, like Craig Carter of Aces Wild, who showed us why he’s a force to be reckoned with in the steak world. We also had the pleasure of connecting with Randy Paulie from Holy Cow Cookers and Matt from Plainville Farms, who both impressed with their skills and camaraderie. The atmosphere was electric, filled with sizzling steaks, perfectly smoked briskets, and an endless array of mouthwatering aromas.
Behind the Scenes
One of the highlights of our trip was getting an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at The Shed. Brad Orrison gave us a tour that felt like a masterclass in BBQ culture. The Shed isn’t just a joint; it’s a community hub where food, music, and Southern hospitality come together to create magic. We also got to sit down for interviews with some amazing people, including Louie Louie Seltzer (check out his sparkling water at drinklouielouie.com) and Kell Phelps, who shared stories that we can’t wait to feature on the podcast.
The People and the Vibes
What truly set this trip apart was the people. From the passionate pitmasters to the innovative brands and the fans who traveled far and wide to be part of the event, the BBQ family was in full force. And let’s not forget the music – The Shed’s bluesy vibes added the perfect soundtrack to a weekend of smoky perfection.
As we packed up and headed home, our bellies were full, our notebooks were overflowing with ideas, and our hearts were filled with gratitude for being part of such an incredible BBQ community. If you’ve never been to The Shed or experienced an NBBQA event, add it to your bucket list. Trust us, you won’t regret it.
Until next time, keep the fire burning and the brisket smoking!
